There is a fascinating story to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just over the border from neighboring Thailand, where casino gaming is not permitted. Eight casinos are established in a relatively tiny location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect destination, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing income gained from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few limitations requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; however, investment sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 17:00, and although visas are apparently necessary to pass, there are methods around this, as is true of many border crossings.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship gambling hall, highlights 150 slot machines and sixty tables. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of blackjack, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of 150 slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slots and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and 96 gaming tables, including 87 punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and sixty six of the normal gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive vacation and hotel compound that highlights a number of luxuries aside from the gambling hall, which has ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty slots and 88 tables.
